Baby milk full of healthy sugars

Return to activities

HMOs. That’s what the special sugars in human milk are called. HMO stands for ‘Human Milk Oligosaccharides’. These sugars have incredibly positive effects on a baby’s health -  from the prebiotic effect (bifidus effect) to the antimicrobial effect, which protects the baby from pathogens, not to mention the harmonious development of the baby’s immune system. These special sugars are very complex and difficult to recreate. Through genetic and metabolic programming, the Inbio lab at Ghent University managed to program bacteria that can produce large quantities of HMOs.
